 Waxing is a procedure to remove unwanted hair from its roots. In some areas hot, “soft” wax is applied to the skin, and a strip of cloth or paper is pressed into the preparation. The strip is then quickly pulled away, taking hairs with it. In other areas hot, “hard” wax is applied to the skin and allowed to cool. The cooled wax is then quickly pulled away, taking hairs with it. Your wax specialist may ask you to assist with pulling skin taut during the waxing process to reduce pain.

When booking the appointment, let your Esthetician know about any allergies or medical conditions you may have. 

Waxing is not suitable for you if:

• you have been using Retin A or Ro-Accutane within the last six months 

• you are on Roaccutane or acne medication 

• you are using anti-ageing or skin thinning products (facial waxing) 

• you are sunburnt or have been exposed to UV rays within the last 12 hours 

• you have varicose veins* 

• you are diabetic* 

• you are allergic to essential oils or latex

 * Please consult your Doctor as this is dependent on the severity of your condition 

Some women find they are particularly sensitive in the day or two before their period. If this applies to you and it is your first treatment, try scheduling your treatment for after this time. It is not recommended to have any bikini waxing done during your period as the skin is particularly sensitive at that time.   

BEFORE WAXING

1.  Exfoliate. While it is recommended that you exfoliate your body regularly (with a body scrub or bath mitt) pre-wax exfoliation should be done 24-48 hours before waxing. 

2. Taking a bath or shower before your appointment will open up the pores and allow the hairs to come out less painfully. 

3. Do not use moisturizer or deodorant on underarms or use any product which may cause a barrier to the wax and irritate the skin. 

4. Trim. Long hair can be more painful to wax. Trimming the hair in the area to be waxed to about a half inch is recommended.

5. Wearing loose comfortable clothing to your appointment and for a few hours after. This will prevent irritation and allow the pores to breath. 

6. If you have a very low threshold on pain, take an over the counter painkiller 20-30 minutes before your appointment.  

 Your hair follicles will be open after your treatment, so it is important to avoid the following for 24 hours after your wax. Keep the waxed area clean, and avoid heat and friction during the next 24-48 hours. 

• No hot baths or showers (warm water only). 

• No saunas, hot tubs or steam rooms. 

• No tanning (sunbathing, sun beds or fake tans). 

• No sport, gym work or other exercise. 

• Avoid scratching or touching the treated area with unwashed hands. 

• Avoid sexual contact (intimate treatments only). 

• Wear clean, loose fitting clothes. 

• Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools. 

• Do not apply deodorants, body sprays, powders, lotions or other products to the area, other than those recommended by your Esthetician.

1. To minimize ingrown hairs it is important to remove the in-grown hair as soon as possible to prevent it from becoming an abscess. Tanning lotions, alkaline cosmetics, after-shave products containing alcohol and bars of soap leave a film on the body that could cause in-grown hairs. It is best to avoid these for at least 48 hours post waxing. Moisturize the area every day to keep the skin supple and help new hairs to grow through safely. 

2.  . You may experience quickly-dissipating, mild discomfort when the wax removes hair from its root. Taking antibiotics may make skin more sensitive and susceptible to some skin lifting.

3.  Please be aware that waxing may cause inflammation, welts, hives, skin lifting, and reddening or small breakouts due to bacteria being pulled out with the hair or sensitivity or allergy to the wax. This is usually not severe and may subside within a few days. If you have reaction, apply a topical antibiotic such as Neosporin, and apply ice, stay out of sun and use a SPF 30 sun block.
